Motivational Monday: How to deal with disappointments

I like to think that I'm a positive, glass half full kind of person. But every now and again, there is a situation (or in my case set of situations) so stressful, so frustrating, so disappointing that I found myself facing a bout of disheartenment, complete with a woe is me attitude.

Frankly I felt quite melancholic (Ok probably not quite as dramatic but I have always wanted to use that word in a sentence J

So I did what was needed at the time, I shut down and completely switched off. Sadly my blog bore some of the brunt of this. I’m sorry guys, but I needed some time off just to feel sorry for myself, lick my wounds and eat lots of ice cream!

Thankfully about a month ago, I had the opportunity to go away for a couple of weeks and whilst I was there, I had the opportunity to people watch for a while and just observe.

I saw people who live in some extremely poor and terrible conditions and in situations that you wouldn’t even want to imagine. But the beauty of it was the spirit of the people, they didn’t feel sorry for themselves, instead they seemed to have a high level of pride in who they are, an attitude of I can do anything and I am going to live life and enjoy what I do have.

I found myself completely humbled by the experience. It was exactly the experience I needed to bounce back, to realise that yes I might have been extremely disappointed and frustrated but that I literally had the whole world in front of me should I choose to go for it.

I also realised that some of the very disappointments I was sad about were actually a complete blessing in disguise.

As I thought about it some more, this is what I l have learnt and would love to share

1      1) Disappointment is not rational, it’s emotional, which is why when others try to talk you out of         whatever mood you have fallen into, it’s so difficult to see the sun in the rain

       2) Take some time out to scream, eat ice cream, cry etc. whatever you need, but put a time limit and don’t linger in your disappointment. There is so much of life in front of you and until you take your eyes off your disappointment, and stop living in your past hurts, you won’t be able to see anything else or start the next chapter of your life.

Motivational Monday: Try one more time

Hey lovelies,

Hope you had a nice weekend

Sometimes, do you ever feel that you are driving along on a long road that just seems to keep going with no end in site?

I had been feeling like that a little bit quite recently

Then I heard the first hand account of a man who had applied for 12 jobs, felt like giving up and then decided to apply to just one more and guess what he got the job.

I made the decision there and then that I would keep my head above the water, change my perspective and keep going.

A few days after that, I got a huge ray of sunshine in the thing I was hoping for

So this post is as much for me as it is for you. When everything around you seems grey, hard and the road seems long.

Keep going, refuse to give up and listen to that little voice of hope within you that whispers ever so gently….why don’t you try one more time.

Hope you have a fantastic week ahead, something good is just around the corner.

Xx

Motivational Monday: The Grass is Greener Where You Water It

Hey lovelies,

Hope you had a fantastic weekend.

If you follow me on twitter, you will know that I was a little under the weather last week, so I completely zoned out to recover, hence the lack of posts. If you don't follow me on twitter, why ever not?!? do come over - here's my Twitter Link and feel free to send me lots of belated get well soon messages.

On a more serious note my life lesson for today hit me after listening to a song by Justin Bieber called "As long as you love me",  in a friends car the other day. I know, I know - Justin Bieber and the words life lesson sounds like a complete contradiction but bear with me...

There is a line in the song that says "The Grass is Always Greener Where You Water it" and it got me thinking of the phrase we all know so well which is "The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side".

Where we essentially look over at someone else and think they have it so much better than we do. I'm definitely guilty of it! *covers face in shame*

But if we are completely honest and  take a long hard look, I think what we are really doing is comparing "our behind the scenes to someone else's highlights" especially as we don't know everything they have done to achieve what they have. We are also looking for the easy way out rather than taking the time to really work for what we want.

Motivational Monday: Change your average, change your life

Well known motivational speaker Jim Rohn once famously said "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with". I came across this quote again recently and started wondering if it was true.

Looking back over my life and some of my biggest achievements, I realised there was quite a big element of truth to it.

One example was in my final year of university. A few major things had happened in my third year which had thrown my grades off by quite a bit, and I suddenly found myself sitting borderline between a 2:1 and 2:2 grade.

Determined to get nothing less than a 2:1, I made a decision there and then to spend all my study time with a couple of people who at that point were only acquaintances but who later on became really good friends.

The reason I picked them was because one of them was set to achieve a 1st and the other person was borderline between a 2:1 and 1st.  I didn't realise it fully at the time but studying with two people who were already doing so much better than I was pushed me beyond my wildest imagination (even if it was  only so I didn't look stupid whilst studying with them!)
